Mouthguards
Custom Sports Mouthguards at Ferny Hills Dental
Why Wear a Mouthguard?
Contact sports and high-impact physical activity increase the risk of trauma to the mouth, jaw, and face. Even in non-contact sports, accidental falls or collisions can cause serious damage. In fact, injuries to the upper front teeth account for around 83% of all sports-related dental trauma.
Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard can:
- Cushion the impact of a blow to the face
Prevent chipped, fractured, or lost teeth - Reduce risk of jaw fractures and soft tissue injuries
- Help protect against concussion by absorbing shock
- Provide peace of mind so you can focus on performance
The Difference Between Store-Bought and Custom Mouthguards
There are several types of sports mouthguards available, but not all offer the same level of protection:
Store-Bought (Boil-and-Bite)
Available at chemists or sports stores, these require the wearer to heat and mould the guard at home. While inexpensive, they often:
- Fit poorly and feel bulky
- Offer minimal retention and protection
- Interfere with breathing or speaking
The Australian Dental Association does not recommend store-bought mouthguards for competitive or high-risk sports.
Custom-Fitted Mouthguards
Made by your dentist from a mould of your teeth, these offer:
- Tailored fit and comfort
- Optimal shock absorption
- Unrestricted breathing and communication
- Durable, high-quality material that lasts
Custom mouthguards are particularly important for children and teens who are actively growing. Our dentists can ensure a perfect fit that adapts to changes in dental structure over time.
