Why Preventive Dentistry Matters
Oral health is closely connected to overall wellbeing. Gum disease, decay, and infections don’t just affect the teeth — they can have broader implications for your systemic health. Preventive care reduces the risk of developing advanced dental conditions, and also supports:
- Improved gum and bone health
- Reduced likelihood of tooth loss
- Early diagnosis of oral abnormalities
- Reduced treatment costs and complexity over time
- Association of gum disease with Alzheimer’s
By committing to regular check-ups and cleanings, you’re investing in your health, comfort, and confidence
What’s Involved in a Preventive Care Visit?
- At Ferny Hills Dental, preventive care goes beyond just a “quick clean.” Your 6-monthly visit is a comprehensive review of your oral health, tailored to your specific needs. Here’s what you can expect:
- Full Dental Examination
Your dentist will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and bite, checking for signs of decay, gum disease, enamel erosion, or wear. - Oral Cancer Screening
We perform a visual and tactile assessment of your soft tissues, tongue, cheeks, and palate to check for any abnormal changes. - X-Rays (as needed)
Digital radiographs may be taken approximately every 2–3 years, or sooner if there are concerns. These help detect hidden decay, bone loss, or issues under existing fillings. - Professional Scale and Clean
Using ultrasonic or manual instruments, we remove built-up plaque and tartar (calculus) that cannot be eliminated with brushing or flossing alone. This helps prevent gum inflammation and infection.
Polishing
After scaling, we polish your teeth to remove surface stains and leave your smile feeling fresh and smooth. - Fluoride Application
A concentrated fluoride treatment helps remineralise enamel, strengthen teeth, and reduce the risk of decay — especially in patients prone to cavities.
The Role of Tartar in Gum Disease
Tartar (also called calculus) is hardened plaque that forms when bacteria in the mouth mix with saliva and food particles. Once it builds up, it becomes difficult to remove without professional help. Left untreated, tartar can irritate the gums and lead to periodontal
(gum) disease — an inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth.
- Gum disease has also been linked to systemic conditions such as:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Diabetes complications
- Respiratory illness
- Adverse pregnancy outcomes
By staying on top of preventive care, you can minimise your risk and support overall health.
Cleaning: More Than Just Aesthetic
Professional cleaning (also known as scaling and prophylaxis) goes beyond surface polish. It’s a clinical procedure designed to:
- Remove tartar (calculus) that can lead to gum disease
- Reduce inflammation and bleeding of the gums
- Prevent bad breath associated with bacterial build-up
- Polish enamel to remove superficial stains from coffee, tea, or red wine
This process helps reduce your risk of developing periodontal (gum) disease — a leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and keeps your mouth feeling fresh and healthy.
